King Charles III

King Charles III Ice Sculpture from Passion for Ice

King Charles III became king upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II on 8th September 2022. His coronation was on Saturday 6th May 2023. Queen Elizabeth came to the throne in 1922 succeeding her father, King George VI.  She reigned for 70 years (1922-2023).

King Charles III and Royalty

We are Royalists at Passion fo Ice and love it when a someone asks us to create something or other based on Royalty - from a bust, to an orb to the Royal cypher / crest.  We take pride in and are passionate about our work and make sure everything we design, carve and deliver is the best we can do.

Recently we were asked if we could create a bust of King Charles III made of ice.  Ice is not the easiest of mediums to carve from - physically, carving a block of ice is not a problem, however, one little and it can be little, mistake can spell disaster.

Carving a nose for example, the slightest miscalculation (with a chisel) can mean abandoning the ice block completely and starting all over again.  This is not good news.  It can take 5-6 days to make a single ice block. Then the time to prepare the ice block, outlining the design and then carving. The closer we get to the end of carving a sculpture, the more careful we have to be.  Again, one slight slip-up could could mean hundreds of pounds down the drain and us starting all over again.

Luckily these instances are rare, very rare (thank goodness).  If a mistake happens it is usually down to the ice block - natural substance - just filtered water frozen.  Small fischeurs can appear in the ice when we are carving.  Not noticeable when one starts.  The vibration of a tool can split the ice.

The King and Ice - King Charles III Bust

We think this is a GREAT piece of ice carving. We tried hard to see if we could carve it from one ice block to make it cheaper for clients.  Everything in ice carving HAS to be in proportion and the right perspective when carved.   Carve it small and it just doesn't look right and of course, it will melt faster.  In the end we found just over two ice blocks was just the right amount of ice to carve this royal portrait.

The bust stands approximately 1m high by 1/2m wide and about 1/2m in depth.

This carving takes just over a day to physically carve.  It is not a 'fast' carving (fast for us can be 2-3 hours....depending on the sculpture design of course).  The image above (and below) was an ice sculpture, if wish it to be a Vodka Luge - not a problem.  Just let us know.
